The Mardi Gras and The Brazilian Carnival are celebrated with festive parades with eye catching floats, dancers, performers and beautiful costumes. They are both described as the world's biggest block parties. The celebrations are both in the month of February. They have brought people together and become party oriented. Being in different countries there cultural pride reflects the diverse cultural influences of the Caribbean and is shared and celebrated at the same time. The celebrations gives people a better understanding of the importance of celebrating your culture through music and dancing. So even being in Louisiana you can feel the essence of Brazil.

Yes, they are so similar and I never put the two together! I had no idea they were held during the same month of February. That is why we must keep communicating and learning each day about our culture and heritage. Music and dance are such an important part of our culture and it still is today! I grew up around so much music, my Dad was a DJ part time and our basement was a studio. As I think back, we were tapping into our history in that basement! Dancing, singing and music are important!

I agree, carnival and mardi gras are very similar and they both seem to have African roots. From the colorful costumes, to the singing and dancing, to the themes of both festivals. This proves the African diaspora is spread wide because of the similarities between people of African descent in the Caribbean and in the southern US, not only Louisiana but also in Mobile, Alabama. This is an example of how the African culture stood the test of time and became ingrained in the American and Caribbean culture.
